One part of CICOES mandate is to prepare the next generation of NOAA employees. An academic training ladder typically includes undergraduate students, graduate students, and Postdoctoral fellows. CICOES has run a nationally recognized, summer intern program for over a decade that promotes opportunities for undergraduate students from diverse backgrounds. At the other end of the spectrum, CICOES has supported Postdoctoral Fellows since 1978 who have conducted leading research in collaboration with NOAA, CICOES Research Scientists, and Faculty from CICOES-affiliated departments. An omission in CICOES educational pipeline is the support of graduate students. Graduate students cannot be directly appointed to CICOES but that does not limit CICOES ability to support graduate student training and research through affiliated researchers and faculty. To that end, CICOES is initiating the CICOES Graduate Student Fellowship Program. The objective of this program is to support graduate student programs conducted in association with CICOES research scientists, NOAA research scientists, and UW faculty in CICOES-affiliated departments.
Specific objectives of this initiative include:
- Increasing the number of CICOES PIs on graduate student committees for research collaboration that enhances a graduate student program and results in a product (e.g. published paper) that includes at least one CICOES PI as a co-author.
- Increasing the number of graduate students that are competitive candidates for NOAA employment opportunities.
- Providing a ‘finishing up’ quarter for thesis/dissertation completion by graduate students working on projects related to CICOES research themes.
- Promoting cross-disciplinary, climate-related research through the University of Washington’s Program on Climate Change
This is a pilot program in 2019-2020 and is envisioned to be part of CICOES TASK 1 activities going forward. The total number of fellowship quarters available is dependent on budget projections. In the pilot year, four quarters of support will be available from CICOES, with an additional four quarters from the College of the Environment. Eligible graduate students include those working in association with and supported by CICOES PIs, working with NOAA Scientists, and/or working with CICOES-affiliated Faculty. Two application periods will be available for the coming year: fall and spring. A completed application package is to be submitted by September 18, 2019 for Fall 2019 and Winter 2020 quarters, and March 18, 2020 for Spring 2020 and Summer 2020 quarters. A 50% Research Assistant (RA) appointment is available for each quarter. Graduate students in their first year are not eligible to apply. Applications are reviewed by the CICOES Council.
