CICOES Welcomes 13 Remote Interns for Summer 2021

CICOES is excited to announce the start of our 2021 undergraduate internship program. Our 13 interns began on Monday, June 21, and are working on remote researchers projects with scientists at the University of Washington and NOAA. The students have been invited to Seattle for the final week of the program where they’ll have the opportunity to participate in in-person presentations on Thursday, August 19, 2021.

2021 Undergraduate Interns

Doris and her dogDoris Carbajal (she/her) – Washington State University

Doris is a senior majoring in environmental and ecosystem science. This summer she’ll be researching the effects of Covid-19 on Alaska fisheries with Dr. Sarah Wise at the NOAA Alaska Fisheries Science Center.

  • I have, sadly, never had the opportunity to travel outside the country (barely even outside of Washington) and I hope to be able to fulfil my dream of seeing the world some time in the near future.
  • I am a first-generation college student.
  • I can be quite artistic and creative if I am suddenly struck with motivation and inspiration.

Theo Daniels (he/him) – Howard University

Theo is a sophomore majoring in biology and political science. This summer he’ll be studying nitrous oxide in marine environments with CICOES researchers Dr. Bonnie Chang and Dr. Noel Pelland.

  • I’ve played soccer for most of my life and it’s my favorite sport.
  • I love collecting sneakers and I have a sizeable collection.
  • I love long distance bike riding.

Sara Dixon (she/her) – Colorado College

Sara is a senior majoring in environmental science. This summer she’ll be developing high-resolution probabilistic Tsunami Design Zone maps with Dr. Yong Wei, a CICOES researchers with the Pacific Marine Environmental Lab.

  • I am a part of the minority who is left-handed
  • I am adopted from China and I run a club for adoptees at my college
  • I have only lived in landlocked states

Emily Evenson (she/her) – Washington State University

Emily is a senior majoring in wildlife ecology and conservation sciences. This summer she’ll be using historical nautical charts to map kelp extent in Alaska with Dr. Jordan Hollarsmith at the Alaska Fisheries Science Center in Juneau.

  • In my free time, one of my favorite hobbies/past times is paddle boarding in Puget Sound. In one excursion last summer, I had a few orcas pass by me. It was exhilarating, and also a little scary!
  • I love traveling overseas (pre-pandemic). I’ve been to about 9 different countries and hoping to add more to the list soon!
  • I have a fairly large book collection, I love reading and have about 100 books in my collection!

Alexis Irvin (she/her) – University of Florida

Alexis is a junior majoring in environmental science. This summer she’ll be examining interannual climate variations at a future ice core site in Antarctica with Dr. T.J. Fudge in the UW Earth and Space Sciences department.

  • I have two horses, an Appaloosa and a Thoroughbred!
  • I am originally from Detroit, MI
  • At the University of Florida, I lead outdoor adventure trips including mountain biking, stand-up paddle boarding, and backpacking!

Sarah Kilpatrick (she/her) – New York University

Sarah is a senior majoring in mathematics and minoring in data science. This summer she will be working with CICOES researcher Dr. Andy Chiodi to explore how the climate over the Pacific Ocean influences weather in the Pacific Northwest.

  • She collects state & national park quarters and loves to accumulate pressed pennies from her travels.
  • Her most memorable summer was working as a letter carrier for the US Postal Service; she worked through the pandemic, the California wildfires, a presidential election, and even the Christmas rush!
  • Her favorite place to visit in New York City is the Metropolitan Museum of Art because of its extensive collection of impressionist artwork.

Paul Lecheung (he/him) – University of Alaska Fairbanks

Paul is a junior majoring in fisheries and ocean sciences. He’ll be developing fixed wing drones for arctic research with Dr. Peter Gaube in the UW Applied Physics Laboratory.

  • I’m love diving into an engine or something that requires working with my hands in a similar nature.
  • I enjoying being outside and doing anything that sporadically comes to mind.
  • I went on a spontaneous road trip to Prudhoe Bay, Alaska (Furthest Northern town in America you can drive to) because I wanted to go there.

Cecelia Ngo (she/her) – University of California Riverside

Cecelia is a senior majoring in physics. This summer she will be working with air-sea fluxes in the Arctic region under the guidance of Dr. Chidong Zhang at the Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory.

  • I take care of a wide range of plants in her spare time.
  • Every time I go on a hike I find different fungi to identify.
  • When I’m not studying I’m probably reading philosophy or playing chess.

Jasmine Ogiste (she/her) – Oberlin College

Jas is a senior majoring in environmental studies and piano performance. This summer she’ll be working with Dr. Abby Swann in the UW Department of Atmospheric Sciences to learn how plants will change water cycling in a future climate.

  • Jas has five cats, one dog, and one fish.
  • Every year, she and her family complete a 65 mile bike ride from Manhattan to Montauk.
  • As an assignment for a music history course, she created a long-form story project on how Beethoven was paid, which was later published.

Jackson/Parker (he/him) – Hobart & William Smith Colleges

Jackson is a senior majoring in Geoscience. This summer he will be evaluating lightning production efficiency and its variability in tropical maritime deep convection with Dr. Joel Thornton in the UW Department of Atmospheric Sciences.

  • I’ve been playing guitar for 12 years and have played 200+ live shows
  • I’m an avid fly and conventional fisherman
  • My least favorite vegetable is cauliflower

Lucia Roussa (she/her) – Eastern Washington University

Lucy is a senior majoring in biology and environmental science. This summer she will be assessing the impact of jellyfish on Puget Sound with Dr. Julie Keister in the UW Oceanography department.

  • I love to SCUBA dive
  • I have kayaked through mangroves in Bonaire
  • I have 32 houseplants, the oldest being 11 years old!

Lulu Russell (they/she) – Massachusetts Institute of Technology

Lulu is a senior majoring in physics. This summer they will be researching extreme events in the Arctic with Muyin Wang, a CICOES researcher with the Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory.

  • I thru-hiked the entire Appalachian Trail southbound in 2017.
  • I have a form of synesthesia where music has temperature (For example, electric guitar tends to be very warm, piano is very cold).
  • In high school, I once broke my right femur while longboarding on crutches.​​

Elizabeth Warfield (she/her) – Florida Gulf Coast University

Elizabeth is a senior majoring in environmental studies. This summer she will be assessing deep convection over Central America in GOES-16 cloud top temperature observations with Dr. Yolande Serra, a senior research scientist with CICOES.

  • I biked 100 miles from Key Largo to Key West
  • I run FGCU’s high ropes course and outdoor trips
  • Last year I did an East Coast road trip
