Graduate Student Fellowships
The CICOES Graduate Student Fellowship program aims to facilitate graduate student research and the training of next generation NOAA scientists through opportunities to participate in NOAA-relevant research conducted in association with CICOES research scientists, NOAA research scientists, and UW faculty affiliated with CICOES.
Specific objectives of this initiative include:
- Increasing interactions between CICOES, NOAA, and NOAA-funded scientists with graduate students in the UW College of the Environment, including increasing the number of CICOES PIs on graduate student committees.
- Enabling existing graduate students to conduct or continue NOAA-relevant studies with emphasis on publishing research results.
To accomplish these objectives CICOES provides:
- Ongoing students: 1 quarter of RA support that results in the submission of at least one manuscript to a peer-reviewed journal and includes at least one CICOES-affiliated scientist as a co-author. Manuscripts must include an assigned CICOES Publication Number in the acknowledgements.
- Finishing students: 1 quarter of RA support to enable graduate students to complete a thesis or dissertation that addresses CICOES research themes, has direct participation by a CICOES affiliated faculty and/or NOAA research scientist on the committee, and results in the submission of at least one manuscript to a peer-reviewed journal. Manuscripts must include an assigned CICOES Publication Number in the acknowledgements.
Tuition, departmental salary (50% FTE), and benefits will be supported. Eligible graduate students include those working in association with and supported by CICOES PIs, those working with NOAA Scientists, and/or those working with CICOES-affiliated Faculty. Graduate students in their first year and previous recipients are not eligible to apply.
The application period is currently closed. We anticipate reopening it in spring 2026.
