Grant Proposals

Research Funding

Through CICOES’s Cooperative Agreement, research is funded through three official tasks and two informal tasks.

Task I

CICOES supports core programs by providing space, computer access, administrative support, and other services for postdocs and visitors. It’s funded by a NOAA-set fee on all money NOAA awards through the cooperative agreement. Core programs include:

  • One to three postdoctoral fellows on annual appointments, renewable for a second year.
  • CICOES’ Research Development Grants, and Graduate Student Fellowships
  • A portion of CICOES administration and education and outreach activities

Task II

The Task II budgets serve as a vehicle for funding research scientists, other postdocs, and graduate students. The Task II program supports directed, collaborative research efforts between NOAA and university scientists and usually takes place in a NOAA laboratory.

Task III

Task III funds University of Washington research in areas compatible with the CICOES’s major research themes. Task III programs serve as vehicles for funding research scientists (UW faculty and professional staff), postdoctoral research associates, and graduate students and usually takes place on the UW campus.

Task IV

Task IV is an informal designation. These are grants and contracts OUTSIDE the cooperative agreement with NOAA….for example awards from NSF, DOE or NPRB.

Task V

Another informal designation.  These are NOAA-funded projects that are considered supplements to the CICOES cooperative agreement with NOAA–though are funded as separate awards from NOAA.  Funding from the Inflation Reduction Act is one example of Task V funding.
