Professional Development Program
The CICOES Professional Development Program provides funding for CICOES employees to use toward professional development opportunities. The program is focused on opportunities that grow an employee’s development in a new or expanded direction, beyond the employee’s primary day-to-day activities.
Applications will be reviewed by a committee with representatives from PMEL, AFSC, and Wallace Hall. The CICOES Professional Development Program fund totals $25,000 annually.
Funding details
While funding lasts, all CICOES employees are eligible for up to $1,000 annually (January – December). Employees may request up to $800 more if the additional funds are matched by their grant or program budgets.
Funds may be used for any type of professional development opportunity. However, if an opportunity falls within an employee’s responsibilities and could be covered by a research grant—such as conference participation that is an expectation of a grant—then the request may be denied. Popular PDP uses and examples include, but are not limited to:
- Conferences and Workshops
- Certificate and Continuing Education Programs
If you are not sure whether a specific opportunity is eligible, please feel free to reach out to a committee member for guidance.
Workshops and trainings for groups of 10+ can be arranged and may not count toward an employee’s annual $1,000. To hire a facilitator/specialist or to propose something else for your group, please reach out to Carol Pérez at perezcar@uw.edu to begin the conversation.
Application process
- CICOES employees seeking professional development funds must complete the Professional Development Program Funding Application, which requires the following:
- Description of professional development opportunity;
- Benefit to employee’s career goals and current working groups and projects;
- Amount requested and, if applicable, other funding sources;
- Approval from CICOES supervisor and, if applicable, NOAA sponsor.
- Email the completed form to Carol Pérez at perezcar@uw.edu.
- The committee will review applications on a rolling basis via email, aiming to respond within two weeks. To be funded, a majority of committee members must vote to approve the application.
- Recipients must save and submit receipts for reimbursement. More details on reimbursement will be provided after applications are approved.
Employees are encouraged to apply as soon as they learn about a professional development opportunity. Applications may be denied if the opportunity is ineligible, if there isn’t enough time to review the application before the opportunity, or if funds are no longer available.
Eligibility
An employee must be at least 50% FTE with CICOES in order to participate.
